EMDR

EMDR – Eye Movement De-sensitisation Reprocessing – is a very effective therapy, which facilitates recovery from distressing memories, intrusive thoughts and images, and the psychological difficulties associated with them (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, many symptoms of anxiety, and depression).

When we experience a distressing event, the thought, image and sensory impressions can stay with us.  Unlike ordinary experiences, they are not ‘filed away’ in long term storage.  They become pseudo memories, fragments of feeling, image and sensation which can be triggered into awareness by any experience that seems similar to the original event.  Frequently, our minds work hard to ignore, or block pseudo memories – this can be exhausting.

By using alternating left-right movements of the eyes, or alternating hand taps, EMDR activates the mind’s in-built, self-healing processing system.  EMDR reduces the felt intensity of the distressing memories, and re-labels them as  ‘ordinary’, or unthreatening memories.
