EMDR and Me

Relational work is central to my approach.

I will begin by listening carefully to you, helping you to define your problems precisely. In the early stages I will help you to understand how you relate to yourself, and others.  Such work can be valuable in developing self compassion, and complements EMDR very well.

EMDR therapy seeks to address the root causes of mental health problems. This requires some careful preparation. I will conduct a full assessment of your life situation, and I will support you by ensuring that you have the means to self-soothe before we begin processing distressing memories.

Throughout, I will pay careful attention to the therapeutic relationship, the cornerstone of everything useful that happens in therapy.

Experience

I have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (2009), accredited by the University of Plymouth.  From qualification until 2022 I worked for the NHS in community mental health teams, offering psychological assessments and therapy to adults at different ages and stages of the life span. Since leaving the NHS in 2022 I have been working as a private therapist. I work with the many varied manifestations of anxiety, depression, bereavement, trauma and issues relating to ageing and dementia.

I am also an EMDR therapist and member of EMDR Association UK.

In addition to EMDR, I draw upon other trauma-focused approaches, the Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach and mindfulness-based approaches.  My approach is also informed by psychodynamic theory and practice, having had further training and supervision in individual and group related approaches.
